Start third hatch when you feel like it is safe to be greedy and you are out of larvae to morph into drones. The first pair are my creep/defensive queens. I usually start 2 queens after the first pair of queens. You'll learn in time, but that knowledge won't do you any good unless you're a master of the basics. You'll learn what it means when terrans take 2 gasses, or when you see cannons but no move out from a protoss turtling on 2-3 bases. Zerg gets to blow past them and take a real economic lead. Terran and Protoss get temporary economy boosting mechanics. Harass or, even better, expand yourself and blow past him in economy. See him moving out? Interrupt your macro cycle and pump out units instead of drones. Once you have that down pat the rest of the game is about scouting and reacting, which comes with experience. If you have un-spent larva you're prioritizing the wrong things. Be sure that you spend on drones FIRST and tech SECOND. So when you float your first 100 is a good time to take your lair, floating the next 150 is a good time to take a roach warren, the next 100 or so evo or double evo. If you do all that, build queens, and expand, you'll still float minerals. You will win more games than you'll lose by focusing on fundamentals, and you'll build good habits. Is spreading creep, harassing with lings, or paying attention to your scouts causing your macro to suffer? If so, stop doing it until macro becomes easy, automatic, and reflexive. Pay attention when you watch your replays. Caveat: IT IS MUCH MORE IMPORTANT TO DO YOUR BASIC MACRO CYCLE THAN TO NEGLECT IT BY DOING SOMETHING FANCY. Overlord scouting, spreading creep, injecting, scouting with lings, etc. While you're doing all of this you should be playing the game. When your newest expansion starts to saturate (10/16 or so) take a new base. ![]() Any time you float 150 minerals build a queen (up to 6-8).The exception to the above rule: make a couple of safety units at the start of the game (15-20 lings or 6-10 roaches).Spend them on drones unless you're nearing supply cap, in which you spend one or two on overlords. Spend every larva that you have as soon as it spawns. But this generally should fit in well for an opener.ĭon't think in terms of build order, think in terms of priority. ZvZ, keep 3 in gas, maybe pull one off to make your Baneling Nest and go into Ling/Bane phase (this is after a 31 3rd Hatch if you go with PiG's Aggression is Key style opener, you get 31 3rd Hatch, 31 Bane Nest, 31 Overlord, and just make lings/banes/OLs).Īfter that it kind of depends on what you're scouting, what you want to do, etc. Can't remember the proper timing, think it's 32-36 supply. ZvP you get 100 gas then pull 2 drones off gas to get Ling Speed, go for a little later 3rd Hatch. For ZvT you pull 2 drones off gas and one goes to take your 3rd (get it down before you start Ling Speed). Hatch and Pool finish, make 2 Queens and 4 lings (2 larvae worth).More specifically:ġ5+16 Drone (same time, right after OL hatches, one goes to nat or pull a drone off min for it at ~170)ġ9 Drone, rally to gas (3/3), rally hatches to nat mineral line I understand scouting and harass will change things up, but my early game is clicking so well, how can I prolong those nice timings a bit?ġ6 18 17 Hatch Gas Pool is the standard opener. How do I best start the third hatch and queen? Is that queen spreading creep, moving to the third or both? When should I start a Lair, start a roach Warren and take my gasses? Do I saturate all at once? Queens pop, immediately both inject hatches. Keep making drones, as main is 16 on minerals again, point them to nat.Ībout 20 supply spawning pool and nat hatch finish, build a queen in each and start metabolic boost (100/100 about now) Wait until the rallied drone pops, it times nicely with 300 minerals, as I build my nat. Next 2 eggs are drones, rally one to nat. Hello fellow zergs! Could someone please give a general rundown of timers in the early game macro? Here's what I'm doing every game: EDIT: thank you so much everybody, hopefully this post is useful for others as well :)
